La Mesa Servida (The Table Is Set)

This short film is about a man who steals pigs, supposedly to eat with his wife. Set amidst a town where very few people get to eat meat, this story goes from odd to downright silly as the days pass by.

Note: NSFW due to some sexual scenes, but what an ending.

El Otro José (The Other Jose)

This short film is about a taxi cab driver who finds a life-changing moment after going through a rough ordeal - one wherein he gets a pretty bad rejection. His life - and his overall persona - will then seem to indeed change for the better... Or so they say. He'll show her that he has, anyhow.

This starts rather darkly, but it lightens up considerably as the movie progresses. Fun film.

Nico Tiene Una Novia

This short film is about a guy finally finding himself a girlfriend. Features a cute, lovable girl, a toaster, and lots of sparks. A happy and feel good movie, this one.

El Héroe

This award-winning animated short film (in Cannes, no less) presents to us a man who tries to stop a woman from jumping off the subway tracks.

Played out in a sea of grimy scenes and people-crushing waves, El Héroe shows us that life isn't always beautiful, and our good intentions aren't always what's needed.

Yo También Te Quiero (I Like You Too)

This short film features a guy talking about how he waits for his girl friend to be his girlfriend. The pains of being in this nefarious place is given glorious detail, and is peppered only by a building frustration... oh, and a dog.

(For another tale from the friendzone, check out La Carta De Los Secretos.)

El Último Canto Del Pájaro Cú (The Cu Bird's Last Song)

This short film about a man reminiscing his life while on a hospital bed is curious, yet somewhat sad. Interestingly, the story-telling is done with glimpses, mixed memories, and thoughts about the sea.

(The ending is reminiscent of the one in El Orden De Las Cosas.)

Paraíso Perdido (Paradise Lost)

This short film is actually very tragic, but it's beautiful, too. There are just really some times when you can't help but feel so hopeless in life, and it can push you to do some horrible things.

Efrain

This short film mainly has two lessons to offer: one in stealing, and one in getting away. It also features the perspective of a kid who learns an abrupt lesson about family and change.

This one saddened me, probably because of its all-too-real look of what happens at the Mexico-USA border.

*Note: This film has actual English dialogue (with no Spanish subtitles).

La Leche Y El Agua

This award-winning short film featuring an old lady and a cow is a sad, sweet one. Mixing milk and water has never been so poignant.

Dos Ciclos (Two Cycles)

This short film is about the life of a bicyclist in Mexico City. Lots of personality, lots of heart, lots of bike trails.

Indeed, go and do what makes you happy.

Historia De Un Letrero (The Story Of A Sign)

This Mexican short film about a blind man and his sign won a prize at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. Quite a touching movie; it brought tears to my eyes.

(Just to note: There has been talk that the concept for this film was plagiarized, with the initial concept from another short film named Una Limosna, Por Favor. Check out this YT video for more info, although there are no English subtitles for the news report.)

Contra El Mar (Against The Sea)

This touching story of a young family living by the sea brought tears into my eyes.
